Copper gutter and downspout beside a built-up cornice trim block at the eave of a fieldstone home

Copper Gutters and Cornice on a Stone Home in Malvern, PA

On a fine stone home, the details are what set it apart, and few details say craftsmanship like copper. For this Malvern project we installed copper gutters and a built-up cornice trim block at the eave, where the warm metal plays against the fieldstone wall and the slate roof. Copper is a premium choice, and on a home of this caliber it is worth every bit of the soldering and hand-work it requires.

What the Malvern copper project involved

Copper work is a specialty, not a standard gutter job, and this eave combined metalwork with detailed trim. The scope covered:

  • Copper gutters formed and hung for the eave
  • Soldered seams and joints for a permanent, watertight bond
  • A built-up cornice trim block detailed at the corner
  • Copper downspouts routed cleanly along the stone
  • Compatible fasteners and flashing to avoid metal reactions

Why copper is worth the craft

Copper does not rust, holds up beautifully to freeze-thaw winters, and can outlast the roof above it, often becoming a permanent fixture. The mark of real copper work is soldered joints rather than sealant, which is what makes the system watertight for decades. Directing roof water away from the structure protects everything below it, a principle detailed by Building Science Corporation.
