Carpentry and renovation in Berks County

Berks County starts just over the hill from our shop in Ephrata. Windows, doors, siding, exterior trim, porches and finish carpentry, from Morgantown and Sinking Spring to Reading and Douglassville.

The Berks County line is a short drive from our shop in Ephrata, so the southern and western parts of the county, from Morgantown and Wernersville to Sinking Spring and Wyomissing, are as close to us as much of Lancaster County. We also go further east to Reading, Birdsboro and Douglassville.

In the Douglassville area we replaced the windows on a brick house, set new stone sills and fitted a new exterior door into the masonry, and framed a small cricket on the roof behind it. It is a good example of the most common Berks County job we see: a solid brick or stone house whose wood windows, doors and trim have given out while the walls are still fine.

Berks has a lot of that kind of house: brick rowhouses and twins in Reading and West Reading, stone farmhouses in the townships and well-built mid-century houses in Wyomissing and Shillington. They reward careful carpentry, because the masonry will outlast anything we install, as long as the joints between old and new are flashed right.

Houses in Berks County, and what they need

  • Brick and stone houses

Windows and doors set into masonry need the opening cleaned up, flashed and sealed to the brick or stone with a joint that can move. We set new sills where the old ones have cracked or rotted.

  • Rowhouses and twins in Reading

Wood cornices, porch roofs and back additions take the weather. Trim is rebuilt in PVC, and frame additions often need new siding to match.

  • Mid-century houses in Wyomissing and Shillington

Original windows, tired siding and interiors that want better trim. Good candidates for replacement windows and new casing inside and out.
